About Us

We are a group of people who want to make much of Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

Our hope is to be a church that reflects the grace we have received from God to our neighbors in Christiansburg, the New River Valley, and beyond.

Providence is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America and part of the Blue Ridge Presbytery.

Our Story

Ministries

Gathered worship at Providence is our primary means of communicating the grace of the gospel to Christ’s body each Lord’s Day. We do this through the Word, prayer, the singing of songs, hymns, and spiritual songs and the sacraments. We endeavor each Sunday to bring those who are attending into an encounter with Jesus.

Discipleship is a fancy word that describes learning to follow Jesus in a life of faith. We grow as followers of Jesus in a variety of ways. Currently we have Sunday classes for children and youth, a weekly women’s Bible study, several men’s prayer groups, community groups, and special seminars and retreats throughout the year. Our youth meet the 3rd Sunday evening each month and for special events throughout the year. We aim to be connected across the generations and want our youth to be very involved in the whole life of the church.

We believe that the best life is lived in a web of honest and healthy relationships. While we haven’t done this perfectly, we aim to be a loving community where we share burdens and walk together through the joys and sorrows of life, always pointing each other to Jesus. Beyond our community groups, we plan a number of fun events throughout the year to build our relationships with one another and our community.

Our life as believers in Jesus is best spent serving, both God and people! We are learning together how to best serve the needs of our church, families, and community. We serve regularly at English Meadows in Blacksburg, providing an afternoon service on the 3rd and 5th Sundays of each month. We serve and support the work of our local Pregnancy Resource Center as well as community ministries like Young Life and Mont Co Emergency Assistance Program. Many of our members serve and volunteer locally in a number of ways. We’re also learning to serve our actual neighbors, family, and roommates on daily basis…maybe by simply starting with the dishes.

We want to serve the cause of Christ locally, around our state, and even to the ends of the earth. To this end, we prayerfully serve and support campus ministries at Virginia Tech, new churches around the state, disaster relief efforts in the region and a number of global missionaries in Mexico, Japan, Ethiopia, West Africa, and England. We gladly support our denomination’s global missions agency called Mission to the World.

We are glad to partner with the ministry of Blue Ridge Christian Counseling in their mission of Connecting the Hope of God to the Hardships of Life.

Our Beliefs

Providence Presbyterian, as a Christian church, holds to the historic faith expressed in the Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed. As a part of the Protestant Reformed tradition we also hold to the doctrines set forth in the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as a secondary standard to the Word of God.

Our Foundational Commitments:

  • 1. The absolute authority of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

  • 2. A commitment to the historic Reformed faith as expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms of the Presbyterian Church in America, as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures.

  • 3. The centrality of the Gospel in the life of the church. The Gospel of Grace, revealed in the person and work of Jesus Christ is both the content and power by which we are able to fulfill our purpose as a local church. Jesus works through those who trust in Him.

  • 4. The importance of the local church. The church is the house and family of God, the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, a community where people are transformed through the Word, Sacraments, Prayer, and Fellowship.
